The National Committee for Geographical Names is convened its 18th meeting, chaired by HE. Dr. Engineer Muhammad bin Yahya Al Sayel, President of the General Authority for Survey and Geospatial Information and Committee Chairman, for discussing its agenda topics, in line with strengthening the governance of geographical names and unifying their reference at the national level. The committee showcased the bylaws of the joint government committees for the year 1447 H, and the associated regulations that influence the committee work and term of references, in a manner that supports effective coordination between the concerned authorities and enhances institutional integration in the geographical name's management.

On the meanwhile the committee also discussed the Geographical Names Portal as a national reference, and role that its plays in consolidated data sources, raising its reliability, and facilitating its use by relevant authorities, in a way that supports accuracy and quality of geospatial information and its usage in applications and services.

The committee addressed the requests for changing and approval of geographical names submitted by regions of the Kingdom, and to study them in accordance with the approved regulatory frameworks and standards, in a manner that ensures the integrity of procedures and the accuracy of outputs, and preserves the national and knowledge dimension of geographical names.

On the other hand, the committee also discussed the mechanism for implementing the unified Arab Romanization system, which would enhance the unification of writing geographical names in Latin letters and raise the level of consistency of using them official in maps, systems and related platforms.

The meeting comes as an extension of the committee's efforts to develop the geographical names system and enhance its integration with national authorities and approved organizations, in a manner that supports the quality of its management and its unification at the national level.
